JACINT VERDAGUER

(17 May 1845 – 10 June 1902)
Folgueroles – Barcelona (Catalonia)
Priest and poet, he is the great founder of modern Catalan poetry. His life was deeply marked by his noble, rebellious, and curious character. He lived in a permanent inner struggle between the life of a poet sustained by elites and his convictions of Christian humility. The author of L’Atlàntida and Canigó, he joined epic, nature, language, and mysticism. He ended up persecuted and marginalized by the Church and the bourgeoisie after a deep public and spiritual conflict caused, among other factors, by his work as an exorcist and by his Franciscan writing and convictions. It was during this crisis that he wrote the poem ‘Lo Colp’. A central figure of the Renaixença, his work is monumental and foundational.
