CANCIÓN DE UNA DAMA QUE SE DICE FLORENCIA PINAR

¡Ay! que hay quien mas no vive
porque no hay quien de ay se duele,
y si hay, ¡ay! que recele
hay un ay con que se esquive
quien sin ay vivir no suele.

Hay placeres, hay pesares,
hay glorias, hay mil dolores,

Crown of Castile

Considered a voice of female sexuality in the medieval period and one of the earliest authors whose written texts in Castilian have survived. Her poems, brief but intense, use metaphors of captivity, wild beasts, and carnal pain to speak about female desire and loss. Little else is known about her beyond the fact that she was a lady at the court of Queen Isabella I of Castile (Isabella the Catholic), which suggests that a female literary circle existed and that she was part of it. Unfortunately, very little of her work has come down to us, but even so it reveals a voice of her own and a great symbolic force.
